WINGING Their Way to Success – Magic Wingdom Wins!

WINGING Their Way to Success – Magic Wingdom Wins!

The Magic Wingdom, an independent chicken restaurant on Dormer Place in Leamington Spa has scooped the top spot in both of the Judge’s awards ‘Best Buffalo’ & ‘Best Wild Wing’ at The World’s largest Wing Festival, Wingfest.

The festival, which stipulates vendors may only sell 2 flavours of wing took place in Digbeth, Birmingham last weekend. The Wingdom went on to come second in the same categories of ‘The People’s Choice Award’.

There were 21 of the countries best ‘Wingslingers’ competing at the event including ‘Poor Boys’ & ‘Griedy’s Wings & Strips’.

The Magic Wingdom restaurant opened in 2021 and this was its second ever foray into a street food event.

You can visit The Wingdom Tuesday – Friday 5.30-9.30pm & Saturdays 12-9.30pm and they will be winging their way to Leamington’s Food Festival on September 10th & 11th, the highlight of town’s food calendar.

Owners Sam Cornwall-Jones & Frankie Griffiths are both “blown away” by the win and hope to promote this success over the coming months.

“It’s great to have such national recognition during such a difficult time for hospitality and it will hopefully raise our profile in the town”

The Magic Wingdom is the third site from Great British Pub Award Winners, ‘The Drawing Board’ alongside ‘The DB Bottle Shop & Tap Room’ all in Leamington Spa.

If you are in town you may notice some changes to the frontage of the former House of Fraser store. This is part of a vibrant campaign to bring unused high street windows to life in Royal Leamington Spa which is now underway. This idea follows the lead of other UK towns and cities by transforming the windows of empty business premises on high streets.

The eye-catching images have been developed by taking photographs of cut-glass vessels in the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum to capture the town’s sparkle. The photographs of these beautiful historic assets have then been transformed into high-quality vinyl graphics to be placed in the windows of empty stores to enhance the welcome for visitors to our town centre.

One of the premises where this can be seen is the ground floor of the former House of Fraser store in Parade. The property is being refurbished into high-quality office and design studios in preparation for expanding video gaming company Sumo Digital to occupy the first and second floors.

We hope you agree that this is a significant improvement on what it replaces.

The Great Leamington Flag Trail

The Great Leamington Flag Trail

Visitors to Royal Leamington Spa and local residents are invited to enjoy a fantastic range of events, trails, offers and entertainment as the town centre is transformed to accommodate the Commonwealth Games and other events this summer.

Over the next two weeks, the town is expecting an increase in visitors as people come to enjoy the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls competitions in Victoria Park and the festival site with a giant screen in the Royal Pump Room Gardens.

BID Leamington has created a range of memorable initiatives to welcome and support visitors and residents, and encourage them to explore and enjoy town centre businesses while they are in Royal Leamington Spa.

The Great Leamington Flag Trail involves trailblazers finding up to 64 flags representing the Commonwealth countries and nations which will be placed outside different businesses in the town centre.

Once a minimum of eight flags have been located and named on the entry form, participants can enter a draw to win fantastic prizes donated by local businesses. As an added bonus, naming additional sets of eight flags counts as additional entries, and fully completed forms will be entered into the grand prize draw for a £100 ‘foods of the world’ hamper.

Trail Forms

Trail forms are available from the upper level of the Royal Priors Shopping Centre, the festival site at the Pump Room Gardens and you can download the PDF form HERE. The closing date for entries is August 10.

The Little Book of Offers is also now available in Royal Priors Shopping Centre, the festival site at the Pump Room Gardens, and the Visitor Information Centre and is packed with 60 money-saving coupons at a wide range of independent and high street businesses throughout Leamington Spa town centre.

BID Leamington has also produced a ‘Taste Leamington’ Guide listing all of the fabulous palaces to eat in town, and the town’s ‘butterfly hosts’ will be back with #LoveLeam cotton shopping bags to distribute at key times.

Pedi-bikes are returning to Leamington Spa after their success in 2021 from Saturday, July 30. Two bikes will be based at the Pump Rooms and surrounds to help visitors access the town centre and offer a different experience of seeing and exploring the town’s offer.

In preparing for Art in the Park on August 13 and 14, an updated Art in the Spa Guide and Street Art Trail are now available to encourage visitors to call into the town’s amazing art galleries and explore the wider creative offer throughout the town.

Making the Summer Memorable

Stephanie Kerr, executive director at BID Leamington, said the initiatives had been organised to make everyone’s visit to the town throughout the summer as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

She said: “We wanted to enhance the Commonwealth Games experience for Warwickshire and West Midlands residents and visitors from across the world who are coming to Leamington Spa maybe for the first time.

“The generosity of town centre businesses never fails to surprise me and their support for the Great Leamington Flag Trail and the Little Book of Offers has been fantastic.

“We know the pedi-bikes are popular and aid mobility for some visitors to town whilst providing an opportunity for us to promote the town as they glide around.

“The Art in the Spa Guide has also been launched to coincide with Art in the Park as well as the Commonwealth Games to encourage visitors to the town and the community to pop into our art galleries as well as enjoy the Street Art Trail.

“This promises to be an unforgettable few weeks for those connected with Leamington Spa and the BID Leamington team has been working hard to enrich the experiences of everyone who visits – and hopefully there will be plenty of return visits in the future as a legacy of the Commonwealth Games!”

“It’s been a dream of mine to expand the business and I’m thrilled to be able to do it now. The past two years have been tough, but hard work, determination, my wonderful staff and most importantly my amazing customers have allowed me to do this and I can’t wait to showcase all our fabulous brands to Leamington.

“We will have incredible clothes, fabulous shoes, and gorgeous jewellery all brought to you with the best customer service by this amazing team.”

Right Royal Picnic Is Returning This Summer!

Right Royal Picnic Is Returning This Summer!

People from across Leamington are invited to enjoy a right royal day of celebrations featuring entertainment, activities, games and competitions to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

BID Leamington, in partnership with Royal Leamington Spa Town Council and Warwick District Council, is hosting a Right Royal Picnic which will take over the Pump Room Gardens on Saturday, June 4 between 11am and 6pm.

Families are invited to take along a picnic and enjoy live music and entertainment, fairground rides, cookery classes with ‘Get Cooking’ and tie dye activities, crown making and bunting making with ‘ArtLAB’ in the arts and crafts tent.

There will also be a range of competitions, and visitors can take part in a ‘Corgi Trail Treasure Hunt’, get involved in the ‘Best Dressed’ contest or put their baking skills to the test in the ‘Right Royal Bake Off’ competition.

BID Leamington is thrilled to be once again working with local artist and businesswoman Amelia Renfrew who has designed the artwork for this year’s event.

Amelia, founder of Regency Cleaning Company based in the town centre, was asked to get creative after designing the popular artwork for BID Leamington’s Jubilee Tea Party in 2012.

She has now made a return to create the artwork for the 2022 celebrations, and her latest design is being used not only to advertise the event but as part of a special colouring competition.

A black and white copy of the artwork has been produced and organisers are inviting children to download a copy of this to colour in and bring their creations to display in the competition tent at the event.

Amelia said: “I was absolutely delighted to be invited to design the Jubilee artwork for the town once again.

“I really love Leamington and it was wonderful to pick up my paints and pens again after so long – it reminded me how relaxing it is to tap into our creativity. I really hope everyone enjoys the celebrations.”

Stephanie Kerr, executive director of BID Leamington, said: “We’re delighted to be organising a Right Royal Picnic to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of service.

“It should be a fantastic day of fun and entertainment for all of the family, and we look forward to welcoming everyone along to the Pump Room Gardens with their picnic blankets on June 4.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Amelia once again after using her artwork at our Diamond Jubilee event, and it’s wonderful that we’re able to come together to celebrate 10 years on.

“It’s also excellent that we’re able to use her artwork as part of our colouring competition, and we’d urge families, schools and clubs to all take part in the competition.

“There will also be a variety of other fun competitions taking place at the event, so keep a look out for further details coming soon.”

Berylune will be turning 10!

Berylune will be turning 10!

You read correctly my friend, it’s been 10 years since Berylune opened their wee shop around the corner on Park St.

Berylune came in to being the same year as the UK hosted our 3rd Olympics and the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. A decade on and many things have changed – what they sell, who they are, where they live. Queenie is going platinum, they’ve added some much-loved people to our team, they’ve moved shops, they’ve survived a pandemic…

So, how are you going celebrate?

I’m glad you asked! On Saturday 14th May, 2022, they’ll be hosting Berylune’s First Summer Fete! The door marked ‘Private’ at the back of their store will be completely open to the public for a whole day; you are cordially invited to roam around our whole building (almost!), enjoying refreshments at Ellie’s Lemonade Stand, competing in their first Post Room Olympics, perusing Daisy’s Popup Plant Shop, having fun in Dan’s Photo Booth, adding your stamp to Anya’s Art Installation, winning prizes in the Tombola giveaway to end all Tombola giveaways, and much more!

10th Birthday Fete

FAQs

When is this fantastic-sounding event?

Saturday 14th May, 2022.

Where is Berylune’s Summer Fete going to be held?

At their shop, of course! You might not realise, but 100 Warwick Street is actually a 3 storey building, with a maze of rooms to play in.

Can I bring my family/other half/well behaved dog?

Of course! However, please be aware that their building does span three levels, so there are a number of steps to traverse. This will make visiting with a buggy difficult and they don’t really have space to park them on the shop floor.

Do I need to pay to get in?

Nope! This is a completely free event. However, there will be a Plant Pop Up Shop in addition to their usual (amazing) offering, as well as some special promotions on the day, so don’t leave your pocket money at home!

Do I need a ticket?

Nope! If they become overwhelmed, they might initiate a queuing system of some sort, but the entire event will be on a first come, first served basis.

How long can we expect to be entertained when visiting?

They’ll be open all day (10-5:30pm), but anticipate most visitors will spend between 15 minutes and half an hour taking part in their various activities. Of course, if you get chatting to one of their founders, or become engrossed by the atmosphere, you might find yourself here a little longer. If you’re a larger group or come at a busy period, you may have to wait to have a turn at everything. As this is not a ticketed event, they have no idea what footfall to expect!

I’m not from here, what on earth is a Fete?

It’s like a mini-festival. Traditionally in the UK, villages will host a Fete in order to raise funds for something local, like a new village hall or a church roof. People bring their home grown vegetables and baked goods to be judged, they play silly games that involve bludgeoning something resembling a rat, they enjoy a cup of tea on an uncomfortable bale of straw, they throw balls at coconuts and buy a slice of cake that is either delicious or terrible and nothing in between. Sometimes, you get really lucky and find a troupe of middle aged folk with bells on their fingers and toes. They’re doing their own take on this, but they’re not raising any money, their refreshments and tombola tickets won’t cost you a penny, they don’t want to see your vegetables, they’ll have no bells on, and it’s all indoors, so rain won’t be a problem. However, if you bring them cake, they will likely eat it. They’ll even judge it for you if you insist.

I can’t make it to Leamington, will I miss out on the fun completely?

Would they leave you out?! They’ll think of something, watch this space!

Please keep up to date with Berylune and this event by following them on Instagram and Facebook and take a look at their website!

The Great Easter Egg Hunt 2022

The Great Easter Egg Hunt 2022

The Great Easter Egg Hunt returns to Leamington Spa town centre this April!  The trail is aiming to hatch a bit of fun while encouraging families to support and explore their high street.

Encompassing 56 shops the trail will run from Friday April 15 to Friday April 22 and will also introduce treasure hunters to some new businesses along the way!

BID Leamington has organised the trail where colourful eggs will be displayed in shop windows with a choice of four trails, pink, yellow, green and blue or you can do them all!

There are four ‘golden eggs’ to be found, one on each route and once found treasure hunters just have to jot down the name of the shop(s) onto the entry form to be entered into a prize draw to be in with a chance of winning prizes from £5 book token up to £50 gift voucher to be spent in Leamington Spa Town Centre shops.

The Great Easter Egg Hunt coincides with the Easter holiday break, and Alison Shaw, project manager at BID Leamington, hopes it will encourage people to hop around the town.

She said: “We wanted to spread a bit of Easter fun around Leamington and give families a reason to come into town.

“It’s a great way for people to explore the town visiting a wide range of fantastic retailers and have a bit of fun.

“We hope plenty of people give The Great Easter Egg Hunt a go, and we’re looking forward to seeing families explore Leamington Spa this spring.”

Entry forms for the Great Easter Egg Hunt can be downloaded here, can be picked up from the white unit on the Lower Mall of Royal Priors, or can be found in all participating shops.

A post box for posting entries will be located at Lower Mall of Royal Priors Shopping Centre, or entries can be posted directly to BID Leamington.
